AWOMAMA, IMO STATE – A community is in mourning after a catastrophic head-on collision claimed the lives of at least 15 members of a Jehovah’s Witness congregation returning from a religious convention on Monday evening, IgbereTV has learned.
The devastating incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. at the Awomama Bridge. Preliminary reports from authorities indicate that a trailer, traveling unlawfully against the flow of traffic, collided directly with the bus carrying the worshipers.
Tragically, all 15 occupants of the bus were declared deceased at the scene. The victims, identified as members of the Agwa congregation in Oguta Local Government Area, were on their journey home from their annual convention held in Uli, Anambra State. Emergency responders transported the bodies to a local morgue.
The news has sent shockwaves through the close-knit religious community. In an official statement, the Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area, Mr. Ifeanyi Nnani, characterized the event as an “unimaginable tragedy” and a “devastating blow to our people.”
Speaking through his aide, Orum Desmond, the chairman extended his profound condolences to the families and the entire congregation. “Our hearts are heavy, and we pray for God’s divine comfort and strength for every household and fellow worshipper affected by this profound loss,” the statement read.
Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the trailer driving in the wrong direction on the bridge. The congregation now faces the somber task of preparing to bury their loved ones.
