Brasília, Brazil — August 25, 2025

Nigeria and Brazil have deepened their bilateral ties with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The MoU was signed by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology of Nigeria, and Luciana Santos, Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. The signing was witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR of Nigeria and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, underscoring the high-level commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) as engines of sustainable development.

The agreement provides for collaboration in biotechnology and bioeconomy, ocean science, energy, space research and development, digital transformation, innovation ecosystems, and raw materials development. It builds on earlier cooperation frameworks between both nations while responding to new global challenges, including climate change, digital disruption, and industrial transformation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Nnaji described the MoU as “a statement of shared vision,” noting that it would open “new frontiers in biotechnology, energy, digital transformation, space research, and raw materials development.” He emphasized that under President

Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria views Brazil not just as a partner but as “a trusted ally in building ecosystems of innovation that will benefit our peoples and the wider world.”

Both Presidents hailed the signing as a milestone in South-South cooperation, with President Tinubu highlighting Nigeria’s resolve to harness technology for inclusive prosperity, while President Lula da Silva called the MoU “a partnership for the future.”

The agreement is expected to unlock new opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and youth in both countries, while reinforcing

global efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This development marks a new era in Nigeria-Brazil relations, reflecting a shared determination to use innovation and technology as drivers of growth, jobs, and sustainable progress.
