A tragic crane accident at a construction site in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos has claimed the life of Rotimi Adesina, a crane operator, prompting swift intervention by the Lagos State Safety Commission.
According to an official statement, the Commission sealed off the construction site immediately after preliminary investigations confirmed the fatality. Adesina was critically injured during crane operations and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Officials from the Lagos State Safety Commission arrived at the site shortly after the incident occurred. The Project Manager, Hein Coerzer, and the Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, were questioned and asked to provide all documentation related to the crane and site operations.
The Commission stated that all relevant documents are currently held at the company’s head office and must be submitted for comprehensive safety compliance review.
“The safety of lives is key, and on no account should safety precautionary measures be compromised,” said Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Safety Commission.
In response to the fatal accident, Mojola ordered the immediate sealing of the construction site, serving an abatement notice to halt all operations until the site is deemed safe. The action aims to prevent any further danger to workers and site personnel.
DG Mojola expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing strict safety protocols on construction sites.
“We are committed to ensuring such tragic incidents do not happen again by strictly enforcing safety standards across all construction projects in Lagos State,” Mojola added.
Further updates on the ongoing investigation are expected in the coming days.
