Lagos, Nigeria – A 32-year-old woman from Ebonyi State, Mrs. Rosemary Igwe, is being held at Luscent Hospital in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, after delivering a set of triplets via cesarean section. The new mother and her babies are being detained over an unpaid medical bill of ₦850,000 IgbereTV reports.
Mrs. Igwe, a mother of three older children and an indigene of Ezza Egu in Ishielu LGA, Ebonyi State, gave birth to three babies at the private hospital but has been unable to settle the bill. Her husband, a low-income earner, has reportedly exhausted all available funds on the emergency surgery and postnatal care.
The hospital management refused to discharge her and the newborns until the full payment is made, leaving the family in distress.
However, after appeals the hospital management eventually released them on compassionate grounds, though bills remain unpaid.
Appeal for Help
In tears, Mrs. Igwe pleaded for public assistance, saying: “I never expected this situation. My husband and I are struggling to raise the money. We are begging Nigerians to help us so we will be able to train these babies.”
“We’re currently living in a one room, which is no longer sufficient for our enlarged family, we need help to get a better accommodation for the children.”
