Akume Rules Self Out Of APC Chairmanship Bid

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has distanced himself from the race to occupy the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akume’s clarification follows media reports suggesting that he is among those jostling for the party’s top leadership seat.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, the SGF described the report as baseless and a mere distraction from the responsibilities entrusted to him by President Bola Tinubu.

He stated categorically that he is not competing for the APC chairmanship or any other position within the party. His primary focus, he said, is to faithfully execute the mandate given to him by President Tinubu and ensure the successful implementation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“While Senator Akume believes that there are qualified candidates in the North-Central who can vie for the national chairmanship position—should the party zone it to the region—he is of the firm view that his priority is to contribute meaningfully to national development rather than get entangled in intra-party politics,” Odunuga said.

Quoting Akume, he added: “I am not in a hurry to abdicate my responsibilities or the tasks that the President has placed before me. I firmly believe that whatever is destined for me will come to pass in due time. I cannot be in a race I am not interested in.

“Everything I have achieved in life has come through the grace of Almighty God and the support of others, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. To say that I am among the prominent politicians vying for the APC chairmanship is completely false.

“My focus remains on helping actualize the Renewed Hope Agenda, so Nigerians can enjoy the true dividends of democracy. We are working day and night under the President’s leadership to deliver on these promises, and we are fully committed to that mission.”
