On the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, a tragic event unfolded at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, in Obio/Akpor LGA, Port Harcourt. The Rivers State Police report states:
Cynthia Chukwundah, reportedly a 300‑level undergraduate at the University of Port Harcourt, and her boyfriend, 32‑year‑old Saint Sunny Amadi, were involved in a heated argument that escalated rapidly.
Neighbors reported that the disagreement centered on the pregnancy Cynthia was carrying, allegedly Sunny’s child.
According to eyewitnesses , Cynthia left briefly during the fight, returned with petrol, and when Sunny had fallen asleep, doused him and their apartment with fuel before setting it ablaze.
Both sustained severe burns—Sunny was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), but died from third-degree burns.
Cynthia also suffered burns. She was apprehended by the police and hospitalized under their supervision.
The Rivers State Police launched a full investigation; as of July 8, the probable cause of the fire was under review.
