‎The unwavering commitment of Gov Umo Eno PhD, to rural development has again been demonstrated as the construction of the long-anticipated 12.5KM Nung Ukim Ikono – Afaha Obio Enwang – Nung Udoe Itak Road in Uyo and Ikono LGAs has officially been flagged off.

‎The event, which took place on Wednesday, at Nung Ukim, Uyo LGA, drew a large gathering of community leaders, government officials, support groups and residents across the state.

‎Representing the Governor at the event, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Enobong Uwah, conveyed the Governor’s deep passion for equitable development across all parts of the state.

‎“This project is the fulfillment of a personal promise His Excellency made to the people of Ikono.

“Governor Eno is a compassionate, peaceful, and purposeful leader who believes in taking development to the grassroots.

‎”To ensure that Akwa Ibom state is turned into a tourist destination, one of the important things is for us to have very sufficient infrastructure.

“Of course, good road networks is one of the major factors that drive tourism. That is why we are anchoring the next few years of this administration on that as well.”

‎”This road will not only open up economic opportunities for the people, but will also promote tourism and interconnectivity across the state.”

‎Highlighting the administration’s proactive approach to projects initiated, Mr. Uwah noted that the contractor, Verini Construction Company, had already commenced work on the road project even before the formal flag-off – a practice that reflects the Governor’s resolve to match words with action.

‎”As you are aware, the contractor has already started work. In his administration, His Excellency always prefers contractors to start work before the flag-off.

‎”I am aware that Verini has already started work, and I know that in the two-year period he has given, being a tested company, this job will be completed and commissioned before 2027.

‎”So the people of Ikono/Uyo Local Government Areas, I bring you wishes from the Governor. I want you to know that he’s committed to rural development and will continue to flag off these kind of projects everywhere they are needed.”

‎Additionally, the Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Engr. Otobong Essien, who spoke passionately at the event, expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Ikono and Uyo.

‎“I appreciate everyone for coming out. There are so many villages that will benefit from this road. Today, our amiable Governor has come to wipe our tears. God bless him.”

‎In a goodwill message, Hon. UwemEdiomo Asuquo, who represents Uyo in the State House of Assembly, lauded the initiative, emphasizing its historic significance.

‎“For the very first time, Ikono is getting a road that connects directly to Uyo. For doing this, we, the entire Ikono clan, pledge our unwavering support to His Excellency in 2027.”

Earlier while presenting a technical overview, the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, explained that the road, which spans nine villages across both LGAs, will feature an 8-metre-wide carriageway, 25 kilometres of side drains, as well as reinforced culverts and outfall drains at strategic points to ensure durability and sustainability.

He further disclosed that the road will be constructed with a 150mm sub-base, 150mm stone base, and a 50mm asphaltic wearing course—meeting standard specifications for long-lasting performance.

‎Also speaking, the CEO of Verini Construction Company, Mr Ini Utuk, assured stakeholders of the company’s commitment to delivering a quality job.

‎“We thank you for the opportunity. We will not let you down. We promise this road will be completed before 2027.”

‎The project is expected to significantly boost the local economy, enhance access to essential services, and contribute to the broader goal of transforming Akwa Ibom into a thriving tourist and investment destination.
