Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), narrowly escaped death after suspected Boko Haram insurgents opened fire on his convoy in Borno State on Friday. The attack occurred near a frontline military base, sparking renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, confirmed the incident during an interview on Channels Television, monitored by IgbereTV. He revealed that Buratai’s security team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, but the insurgents still managed to destroy multiple military assets, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPVs), tanks, and machine guns. Some equipment was also reportedly looted.
Ndume expressed alarm over the escalating violence, stating that insurgents now operate freely, attacking military positions and stealing weapons. He warned that the security crisis in Borno is worsening and called for urgent action to address the growing threat.
The attack on Buratai’s convoy raises serious questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts, as even high-ranking former military officials are no longer safe in the region. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on casualties or further details of the ambush.
