In a significant political development, Dr. Ini Ememobong, Akwa Ibom State’s Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, has tendered his resignation following Governor Umo Eno’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Eno, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, announced his switch to the APC on June 6, 2025, during a ceremony at the Government House in Uyo. The event was attended by prominent APC figures, including governors and party leaders.
In response to the governor’s directive that appointees unwilling to join him in the APC should resign, Dr. Ememobong submitted his resignation letter. He cited personal convictions and a longstanding opposition to the APC as reasons for his decision.
Dr. Ememobong, who previously served as the state’s PDP Publicity Secretary from 2016 to 2020 and as Commissioner for Information under former Governor Udom Emmanuel, expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded to him. He emphasized that his resignation was a matter of principle and did not reflect any personal disagreement with Governor Eno.
The governor’s defection has caused divisions within the state’s political landscape, with some cabinet members and PDP stakeholders expressing reservations about the move.
