Chief John Okiyi Kalu, former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, has urged President Bola Tinubu to fully restore democratic governance in Rivers State by reinstating Governor Sim Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to their offices, IgbereTV reports.
In a strongly worded statement, Kalu emphasized that Rivers State is now peaceful, with the previously feuding parties having resolved most, if not all, of their differences. He called on Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd) to return to retirement, allowing democratic processes to function without interference.
Kalu criticized the imposition of emergency measures, stating that Nigeria’s laws do not support the removal of elected officials outside constitutional impeachment processes. He also described the National Assembly’s appropriation of Rivers State funds as an aberration, urging the state legislature to legalize any such actions upon resumption to prevent future legal disputes.
“Let us allow whatever bit us at night to be just a mosquito and move on,” Kalu said, advocating for reconciliation and the immediate restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.
He further dismissed the notion of a “doctrine of necessity,” insisting that governance issues should be resolved within the framework of existing laws or through new legislation. Kalu also noted that the executive and legislative arms do not need to be in constant agreement to function effectively.
While congratulating President Tinubu and other officials marking their second anniversary in office, Kalu expressed disappointment that the occasion was used to launch re-election campaigns instead of focusing on governance achievements and future plans. He warned that prioritizing politics over governance would harm ordinary citizens.
“Ya diwa, but please restore Fubara and the legislators within this period of celebrating democracy in Nigeria,” Kalu concluded.
