A quiet morning in Edikwu Ankpali, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, turned into a day of mourning as a devastated family on Monday laid to rest eleven of their own, victims of a brutal attack by suspected herdsmen, IgbereTV reports.
The violence erupted on Sunday evening when armed assailants stormed the community, unleashing gunfire that claimed over 25 lives and left many others abducted. Eyewitnesses recounted hours of terror with no security forces in sight, raising further alarm over the escalating insecurity in the region.
Edikwu, just a few kilometers from Ugbokpo, the Apa LGA headquarters, now bears the scars of yet another deadly assault.
Among the grieving, Ben Ekah, a member of the bereaved family, struggled to put his anguish into words. *”Today, we bury 11 of our own—fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. This is the darkest day for our family and our community. Many are lying in hospitals, and countless others have fled in fear,”* he said, his voice heavy with sorrow.
Despite repeated attempts, the Benue State Police Command has yet to comment on the attack, leaving residents questioning when—or if—help will come.
As the graves were filled, so too were the hearts of those left behind with unanswered questions and a plea for justice.
