The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, appeared in court today, May 8, 2025, as his trial resumed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Igbere TV reports.
Surrounded by his legal team, including Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), Aloy Ejimakor, and Emeka Etiaba, Kanu looked calm and composed as the court heard arguments from both the prosecution and defense over his alleged involvement in terrorism-related offenses.
During the cross-examination, Kanu declared, “I wasn’t arrested, I was kidnapped,” referring to his controversial extradition from Kenya in 2021. The Department of State Services (DSS) presented video clips and documents which they claimed linked him to inciting violence and establishing the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Kanu defended the formation of ESN, saying, “They are in the bush protecting our mothers when they go to farms. I formed ESN to protect our people where the government failed.”
He also denied having any direct link to attacks on INEC offices or the killing of political figures, saying, “The movement I lead is not violent. I never ordered anyone to kill.”
The trial was adjourned by Justice Omotosho to May 14, 21, and 22, 2025, for further cross-examination and continuation of witness testimonies.
