Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state of Nigeria’s democracy, particularly targeting the governorship election in Edo State.
In a public address, Obi described the election as undemocratic and claimed that the true winner is widely known among Nigerians.
Obi, a prominent opposition figure, asserted that Nigeria cannot be considered a democratic nation, urging citizens to confront this reality.
“Let’s tell ourselves the truth. Nigeria is not a democratic country,” he said, pointing to the Edo election as a case study. “The election that happened in Edo, was it democratic? Everybody knows who won the Edo election.”
His remarks echo sentiments expressed in September 2024, when Obi labeled the Edo election a “blatant example of ‘state capture’” that undermined Nigeria’s democratic process.
Obi further lamented the broader state of the nation, accusing the ruling party of causing widespread destruction. “We can now start picking up the pieces of our country because they have destroyed everything,” he stated, calling for collective action to address Nigeria’s challenges.
The Edo election, held in September 2024, has remained contentious, with reports of irregularities fueling debates over its legitimacy. Obi’s latest comments intensify scrutiny on the APC and raise questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral processes as the nation grapples with economic and social crises.
