A violent confrontation broke out during the Alor-Agu Progressive Union’s national meeting held in Alor-Agu community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Enugu State. The incident occurred on April 19, 2025, when Mr. Eze Christopher Obumuneke, the embattled Caretaker Chairman of the town union, unexpectedly appeared at the gathering.
Mr. Obumuneke had allegedly abandoned his duties and failed to announce the winner of the Alor-Agu Igweship Election, which took place on March 25, 2025. According to reports, Mr. Christian Ugwuanyi emerged victorious with 694 votes, defeating Okwudili Omeke.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Mr. Obumuneke hired soldiers to intimidate and silence community members who attempted to question his actions during the meeting. The soldiers allegedly assaulted attendees, sparking widespread unrest.
In a show of solidarity, branches of the Union from Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Yolanda, Ondo, and other locations boycotted the meeting in protest of Mr. Obumuneke’s leadership, which has been marred by controversy and crisis.
The people of Alor-Agu are urgently calling on the Enugu State Government to intervene and prevent further escalation of violence in the community, which they attribute to Mr. Obumuneke’s reckless behavior.
