Today, Senate President Godswill Akpabio becomes the first Senate President in Nigerian history to be petitioned on the grounds of sexual Harassment.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Representating Kogi Central Petitions Senate President Akpabio Over Sexual Harassment, Abuse of Office.
My Thoughts:
It remains an allegation until it’s proven.
Hold on , this is the second time a female Government official is accusing Senator Akpabio. The other time in 2020 it was a high ranking female of NDDC. She even said on TV that she slapped the now number three Citizen of the Country in the process of self defence. Is this a mere coincidence?
This present allegation is particularly concerning given the gross underrepresentation of women in the Senate, with only 4 female senators out of 109 Senators.
The fact that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken the bold step to petition the Senate President and even filed a ₦100 billion defamation lawsuit against him suggests that she is determined to seek justice and hold him accountable for his actions.
It’s essential for the Senate to take allegations of sexual harassment seriously, especially given the power dynamics at play.
The fact that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is a woman in a male-dominated institution makes her bravery in speaking out even more admirable and commendable.
This incident highlights the need for greater accountability and protections for women in positions of power.
The Senate must take concrete steps to address the issue of sexual harassment and create a safe and respectful environment for all members.
Will Akpabio step aside to allow for an unbiased investigation of this allegation? Or will he sit tight?
