Lagos Slashes Red Rail Fares By 30%

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the newly completed Abule Egba Bus Terminal in the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, a project designed to improve mass transportation and connectivity within the state.

This was just as he announced a 30 per cent reduction in the fare price of the Red Line rail service.

The governor made this known in a statement on his verified X handle on Tuesday.

The statement noted that while speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the terminal in easing mobility for residents in the area.

โ€œToday, I commissioned the newly completed Abule Egba Bus Terminal in Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), which is designed to enhance seamless mass transportation from this suburb to other parts of our city,โ€ he said.

The governor explained that the terminal is positioned close to the Lagos Red Line corridor, making it easier for passengers to transition between different modes of transportation.

โ€œThis strategic bus terminal, located near the Lagos Red Line corridor, provides a convenient route for passengers to board and exit buses and connect to other transportation options,โ€ he stated.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administrationโ€™s commitment to modernising Lagosโ€™ transport infrastructure to improve the daily commuting experience of residents.

โ€œThis project marks another significant milestone in my administrationโ€™s commitment to upgrading Lagosโ€™ public transportation system with modern, sustainable infrastructure that meets the commuting needs of our citizens,โ€ he noted.

He further emphasised the broader vision of his government to enhance urban mobility and economic growth through an integrated transport system.

โ€œOur vision is to enhance mobility and stimulate urban and economic growth through interconnected transportation networks, offering residents various commuting options by rail, water, or land,โ€ he said.

In a move to make transportation more affordable for Lagosians, the governor announced a fare reduction for the newly launched Red Line rail service.

โ€œTo further improve access to intracity rail transport, I announced a 30% reduction in fares for the Lagos Red Line service, lowering costs from N1,500 to N1,000.

โ€œI am also pleased to share that we expect new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric buses to arrive by the third quarter of this year, which will expand our fleet, increase bus availability, and reduce waiting times at bus stops,โ€ he revealed.

The governor also called on residents to take responsibility for the maintenance and protection of public infrastructure, stressing the importance of community ownership.

โ€œI urge residents to take ownership of this project, as it has been made possible through your tax contributions. Please take pride in it, protect it, and ensure it remains safe from harm. By safeguarding these assets, we can all benefit from their long-term value and continue to build a better future for our community,โ€ he concluded.
