Ohafia, Abia State, was thrown into mourning on Sunday following a tragic accident involving a trailer filled with chippings, which overturned and trapped several people beneath its crushing weight.
The incident occurred around 1:30pm near the popular Nmuri Bridge Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area. Many victims were left pleading for help, enduring unbearable pain, but rescue efforts were unable to save their lives.
In an interview with newsmen, Chief Emeka Mba (Bam Bam), President General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), described the day as a “black Sunday,” highlighting the ongoing suffering of those still trapped under the truck.
“We tried everything but couldn’t get any equipment to lift the truck and rescue the people underneath. It’s a very helpless situation,” Chief Mba said.
He also lamented the poor state of the road, blaming the government’s negligence for the tragedy. “This section of the road is very low, and we’ve done a lot to draw the government’s attention to it,” he explained.
