Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, fulfilled a longstanding commitment by attending the convocation ceremony at Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, Oyo State, where he serves as Pro-Chancellor.
In his remarks, Obi reaffirmed his dedication to the growth and development of the institution, a commitment he has maintained since its inception nearly a decade ago.
Reflecting on the significance of education, Obi highlighted its transformative power and the resilience required to overcome life’s challenges.
A key moment of his speech was the inspiring story he shared about a young leader, Mr. Johnathan Luke Wood, President of the University of California, Sacramento. Obi described Wood’s journey as a powerful testament to determination and perseverance.
Born into a life of adversity, Wood endured immense challenges, including having his mother imprisoned, being adopted, and facing school suspensions for truancy—42 times in total. Despite these struggles, he rose above his circumstances, rewriting his story to become the youngest president of an American university.
Obi emphasized that Wood’s story is a profound reminder of the heights that can be achieved through resilience and hard work.
Speaking to the graduating students, Obi urged them to cherish the knowledge and values instilled in them during their time at Dominican University. He challenged them to redefine success, not by what they take from society, but by what they contribute to it.
“I encouraged them to work diligently to transform our nation from a culture of consumption to one of production,” Obi stated.
In a move demonstrating his commitment to advancing education, Obi announced a donation of ₦50 million to Dominican University. He underscored his belief in education as a cornerstone for societal progress and a tool for inspiring hope and empowering minds.
“I remain dedicated to initiatives that inspire hope, empower minds for a new Nigeria that is truly POssible,” Obi concluded.
