Fishermen in Kebbi state, north west Nigeria have killed a hippopotamus, and shared its parts as meat to the people.
The animal was killed on the order of the Governor and enforced by the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Abdullahi, after it was said to have killed one of the emir’s staff.
It was put down by the efforts of 40 fishermen using bows and arrows have after an extensive search
The animal was later ferried in a local dugout canoe to the Palace of District Head of Gungu, Kasimu Aliyu, where it was slaughtered and its parts shared as meat to people.
Kebbi state has a large body of water and is renowned for its large fishing community. It hosts the annual Argungu fishing festival
However citing of Hippopotamuses are rare in Kebbi. The animal can live on both land and water.
