Centuries-Old Trees Collapse On Traders In Edo; 4 Killed, Several Injured

Tragedy struck at Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State Monday, claiming the lives of four persons and leaving many others injured when trees estimated to be over 100 years old fell during heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM as traders were arriving at the market to set up their stalls amid the rain.

Witnesses reported that windstorms accompanying the downpour uprooted the trees, trapping several people who had sought shelter under them or in nearby shops.

Mr Marvellous Zibiri, Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, confirmed the tragic event, stating that he was informed by his vice chairman about the incident during the rainfall.

“Four individuals lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. They have been transported to the mortuary, while those injured are receiving treatment in hospital,” Zibiri confirmed in a phone interview with Daily Trust.

He expressed gratitude that the casualty count wasn’t higher, attributing this to the early morning rain which deterred many from arriving at the market before the trees fell.

“This market is the largest in Edo North, attracting traders from across the state and neighbouring areas. The trees, which have stood for over a century, were uprooted unexpectedly by the wind,” Zibiri added.

While extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Zibiri assured that the council would repair the damaged structures and remove all old trees from the market area.
