Hundreds of youths took to the streets of Akure today, chanting “EFCC Ole!” (EFCC thief!) to protest the recent arrest of 127 alleged internet fraudsters by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The protesters, mostly young men and women, marched through the city, blocking traffic and causing a stir. They claim the EFCC’s recent crackdown on nightclubs in the city was unjust and targeted innocent people.
The arrests were made a few days ago at various nightclubs in Akure, with the EFCC alleging that the individuals were involved in internet fraud and other cybercrimes.
The protesters, however, insist that many of those arrested were simply out to have fun and were not involved in any illegal activities.
