Benue Assembly condemns alleged assassination attempt on Speaker

Members of the Benue State House of Assembly have condemned the assassination attempt on the Speaker, Aondoona Dajoh.

This was made known on Wednesday during a plenary session, after the resumption from recess.

The members unanimously condemned the dastardly act while debating on a motion brought before it by Elias Audu, representing Gwer East State Constituency.

They urged the House to publicly condemn the act and relevant authorities to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident.

The members further recommended the immediate suspension and replacement of the suspected assassin who they alleged is the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Gboko Local Government Area.

The House during the session presided over by the speaker, Dajo, expressed worry over the influx of herdsmen and their cattle into the state and summoned the security adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Commandant Livestock Guards and that of the Community Volunteer Guards to appear before it next Tuesday to explain the latest development.

Members also expressed displeasure over the influx despite the existence of the open grazing prohibition law of the state which is still in force and appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia to rise to the challenge by taking a definite position.

The lawmakers while reacting to separate motions brought before it by Dauglas Akya of Makurdi South state constituency and Cyril Ekong of Oju 2 on the construction of Awajir- Oju road decried the delay in releasing official cars to the remaining lawmakers and called on the governor to award contract for the road to enhance connectivity within rural communities as well as requested Commissioner for Finance and that of works to appear before them to explain the delay in releasing the remaining official vehicles to members.

In his remarks, while welcoming members from the recess, the speaker charged all standing committees to step up their oversight activities, particularly on the 2024 budget to ensure speedy and full implementation by ministries, departments and agencies
