Nigerian Customs announces plan to increase workers’ salary

Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service Bashir Adeniyi has announced plans to increase workers’ salaries.

Adeniyi disclosed this on Tuesday during an Arise Television interview.

According to him, staff welfare remains a top priority for the service.

“Several massive capacity-building programmes have been organised locally and internationally for our officers in 2023, particularly in the second half,” he said.

“We had over 60,000 Customs officers that went for different capacity programmes at home and abroad. The promotion exercise, which we used to roll over into the fourth or fifth month, we ensured that we started it in Q3 2023.”

On the salary review, Adeniyi said: “The last salary review we had was five years ago. I think we are due for another review. We will look at some of the allowances the officers have been collecting to do their jobs.

“The welfare of the officers is one of the things I felt I should do when I became the Comptroller-General, particularly attending to the welfare issues of our officers.

“And when you talk about that, you talk about what their take-home pay will be, ensuring the allowances are paid at the right time and making provision for issuance in case they come in contact with agonies during their duties,” he stated
