Group gives Osun Assembly 7 days to explain purchase of N40m vehicles for members

The Osun State House of Assembly has been given seven days to make public details of expenditure on purchase of vehicles for lawmakers.

IgbereTV gathered that the cost of a unit of vehicle bought by the Assembly for each lawmaker amounted to N40 million.

The ultimatum was given by a group, The Osun Masterminds, TOM, during its December State of the State address on Wednesday in Osogbo.

Handing down the ultimatum, Olufemi Akindele Lawson, TOM, Director of Research, representing the Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, alleged that the Assembly allegedly splashed N40 million on purchasing Toyota SUVs for each legislative members under the Speaker, Adewale Egbedun.

Oyedokun-Alli said the hope for positive change in governance is being threatened due to lack of concern for the people who the lawmakers represent.

He said the state Assembly had maintained an unwillingness to hold itself accountable.

“We are making an open request to the Osun House of Assembly to disclose within 7 days, details of its N 886,459,882.49 expenditure for the months of July, August and September 2023.

“The people of Osun deserves to know what a 26-Member House of Assembly spent in just three months.”

He also insisted that TOM will not preempt the responses of the Assembly despite having reports that it splashed N40 million each on purchasing Toyota Fortuner SUVs for elected members of the House of Assembly.

“We will not pre-empt the response of the Assembly, but we have reports that the Assembly recently splashed almost Forty Million Naira each on purchasing Toyota Fortuner SUVs for Members of the House of Assembly. The House, under Adewale Egbedun, must come out to give details of that expenditure.

“If it is indeed true that the House of Assembly spent so much money on purchasing vehicles for its Members, then we consider it sad that a House of Assembly populated by young people who are supposed to be our hopes for positive change in governance, is so insensitive to the plights of the people they represent.

“The House of Assembly has 7 days from today, to make details of that expenditure public, failing which we will have no choice but to approach relevant anti-corruption agencies to come take a look at the books of the Assembly,” he added
