A University of Ibadan (UI) Faculty of Law student at the 200-level has been apprehended by the institution’s security officials on charges of allegedly raping a 100-level female colleague on campus.
The incident came to light when the student was reported to the institution’s authorities for his alleged crime against the fresher.
The victim, who had been engaged in night reading with other girls in preparation for exams, relocated from a lecture theatre due to a power outage and decided to take a nap in the Students’ Union building, where the assault reportedly occurred.
Recounting her harrowing experience, the victim revealed that she woke up to a touch and tried to scream, but the suspect subdued her by holding her neck, rendering her voiceless. Fortunately, luck was on her side when another student entered, causing the suspect to flee.
The victim sustained injuries to her neck, lips (due to a bite), and private parts.
Joke Akinpelu, the UI spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway.
“Yes. He (the suspect) was with the security unit until late yesterday (Tuesday). I’m not sure he has even been released,” Akinpelu told NAN.
She stated that the act was reported to the Dean of Students Affairs, adding that he had since swung into action.
“The veracity of the allegation will be known upon completion of investigation,” she added.
