In a tragic incident in the Ayedun Area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, a woman and her nine-day-old infant lost their lives when a water reservoir collapsed onto their sleeping quarters on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the victims were resting in a room of the now-collapsed building at the time of the unfortunate incident. The newborn had been christened less than 24 hours before the tragedy unfolded.
According to an eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, a water reservoir positioned beside the building toppled over, claiming the lives of the woman and her infant. The witness further revealed that additional occupants of the building sustained injuries during the incident.
The resident said, “The water reservoir fell on the building, while the woman and her child were sleeping. Before the neighbours got to the scene and evacuated the victims, they had died.”
According to the resident, the victims were evacuated and deposited at a morgue of an undisclosed hospital in Akure.
The Police Public Relations Officers of the state command , Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced into the incident.
“We have commenced investigation into the matter,” the PPRO stated.
