Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, a prominent striker for both the Super Eagles and Napoli, has officially secured the prestigious title of Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) Footballer of the Year.
The distinguished award was bestowed upon Osimhen during a ceremony held on December 4, 2023.
Joining the ranks of football luminaries like Rafael Leao, Gianluigi Buffon, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andrea Pirlo, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Osimhen’s recognition underscores his stellar achievements in the sport.
Osimhen’s triumph as the 2023 recipient is primarily attributed to his prolific goal-scoring prowess, a key factor in Napoli’s successful Serie A title conquest in the previous season.
His remarkable tally of 26 goals in 32 league appearances played a pivotal role in securing Napoli’s first league title since 1990, marking a historic achievement.
Notably, Osimhen etched his name in history as the first-ever African to clinch the top scorer title in the Italian topflight league. Beyond individual recognition, Napoli’s collective excellence was acknowledged, with Osimhen’s teammates also earning well-deserved acclaim across various categories during the award night.
Despite encountering challenges in the early stages of the 2023-24 campaign and grappling with recent injury setbacks, Osimhen has demonstrated resilience by notching six goals in ten games, showcasing his enduring impact on the field.
