Protests erupted in Kano State on Wednesday, November 22, following the Court of Appeal’s decision to dismiss Governor Abba Yusuf from office.
The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja on November 17, upheld the ruling of the Kano State Election Tribunal that dismissed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared Nasir Ganwa of the APC the winner of the March 18 election.
The protest arose following reports that a certified true copy of the published judgment contained several inconsistencies that appeared to contradict the verdict of the Court of Appeals.
In a widely reported ruling last Friday, the Appeals Court was said to have upheld the ruling of the Appeals Court that removed Governor Abba Yusuf, but State Attorney General and Attorney General Haruna Issa-Dederi argued that the CTC in the ruling text indicates that Yusuf’s victory in the vote was affirmed by the Appeals Court.
Some of the protesters were willing to die to demand justice.
Kano State police forces were forced to use tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. The protesters, however, said they would give everything, including their lives, to preserve the authority of the incumbent governor.
