The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it has fired several staff involved in ticket extortion and demoted others with lesser offences.
This was announced by the Secretary General of the NRC, Mr. This was announced by Fidet Ohiriya on Wednesday, November 1. On the 22nd, during an interactive session hosted by the House of Commons Finance Committee on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper 2024-2026 (MTEF/FSP).
He answered the committee chairman’s questions, James Abiodun Faleke said that “Social Media Clip Shows Employees Engage in Ticket Extortion”.
Mr Ohiriya said: “That’s right. “The solution is electronic tickets, which the government has approved,” he said.
He said the company was cooperating with security forces to eliminate the threat, adding that many of the employees involved in the scandal had been fired and some had been demoted for misconduct. The Audit Office of the Federation expressed concern that the NRC remitted revenue of N345 million to the public budget in 2023, noting that the remittances covered the period from January to September.
But Faleke said: “Our concern is that if we expect so much revenue from the NRC and we don’t get it, then there is a problem. “I think the decision has to be made for the railways to finance themselves, bear their own costs and pay any surplus to the government.”
