By Obuo Chris

Nigerian is currently faced with shortage of food arising from food insecurity across the country.

Warning by the united nations and world food programme about the potential hunger affecting 6.5 million Nigerians next year in certain state has been made known to the government and designated Agencies .

The developing effects of food shortage and food insecurity in Nigeria and its future effects made known calls for urgent critical and achievable measures to advert it’s excaling consequences that would restore food supply and availability that can serve the growing Nigeria population.

This article calls on the government and concern Agencies such as ministry of Agriculture to think out of the box and seek to identify factors aiding the current food shortage in the country.

Nigerians in the streets are faced with server hunger and starvation admist the ongoing economic crisis. It should be noted that palliatives distribution to 15 million household for the said three months period by federal and state government would not restore a sustainable solution to food crises facing Nigerians.

Nigeria Farming strength has no capacity to produce and supply the needed quanlity of food that equate the population demand. A wholistic attention and approach is need to provide a sustainable solution that would salvate Nigerian from food shortage and restore food security in a sustainable manner.

This article by research, has pray the Nigerian government and relevant bodies to Consider Malthusian theory of exponential population and arithmetic food supply growth.
This theory calls for a measure to bring a balance between population growth and food supply. This can be achieved by establishing a (preventive and positive checks).

It should be noted that Nigeria population is growing in a geometrical fashion while food supply is growing in arithmetic rate .it means that food supply before now increases at a slower rate than Nigeria population growth which also clerifies that food supply has been far limited when compared to the growing population in the last ten years.

Increase in Nigeria population rate and which far exceeds food supply within the examined period shows a disquilibrium. As a result, Nigerians would not get enough food even for survival as many people would be forced to experience hunger and starvation.

Adversities such as epidemics ,war starvation, famine and other calamities would crop up which are referred to as positive checks .These are man -made checks .
Nature has its own way of keeping a check on the increasing population to bring population rate to equilibrium with food supply.

Preventive checks such as late marriages , self-control simply living ,
resources development and management, technological advancement for productivity among others help to the population growth and food supply.

This measure does not only check the population growth but prevent catastrophic effects of the positive checks.

It’s expected of Nigeria at this time to look at limiting Nigerian population growth and other causes of food shortage and food insecurity to mitigate effects of food shortage and it’s insecurity.
