Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, has refuted rumors suggesting that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is impeding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
A misleading report had erroneously attributed statements to Tinubu, alleging that Uzodimma was obstructing Kanu’s release from prison.
Contrary to this, Onanuga clarified that the president never made such statements during an alleged address on Monday at the State House, Abuja, where he was purportedly discussing tax increments on the importation of goods with the Igbo business community.
Debunking the report, Mr Onanuga said in a rebuttal shared on X on Tuesday: “The people of Imo State should please disregard the fake news in circulation that Governor Hope Uzodimma is blocking the release by President Bola Tinubu of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
“The fake news is obviously designed to build some resentment against the governor who has done very well for his people and who deserves a second term via Saturday’s election.
“President Tinubu did not meet Igbo businessmen on Monday. He didn’t say what was ascribed to him. He didn’t blame Gov. Uzodimma for anything.
“Sahara Reporters did not report the fake news. The link provided did not lead to the fake news on Sahara Reporters platform. It’s all wicked lies by politically desperate people.”
Kanu has been facing charges of treasonable felony against the state after he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria for prosecution.
