Two people have been confirmed dead and seven others injured in a clash between Fulani and vigilante groups at the Beji Weekly Market in Bosso Autonomous Region, Niger State.
According to residents, the incident occurred on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at about 5 p.m. The market was full.
Beji is located about 30 kilometers from Minna, the capital of Niger State, an agrarian community with a national livestock and grain market.
Aliyu Yusuf, assistant director of medical services at the Beji Primary Health Care Center, told Daily Trust that nine victims were rushed to the hospital with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
He stated that two were confirmed dead and the remaining seven victims (all Fulani) were being treated.
The Niger State Commissioner for Nomadic Affairs, Alhaji Umar Ahmed Rebe, also confirmed the incident and warned against any form of revenge.
He also warned both sides to stop taking the law into their hands, as there are various ways to resolve disputes without resorting to violence.
Abdullahi Muazu, vice president of Zone B of the Miyetti Allah Livestock Producers Association of Nigeria, said the clashes disrupted market activities on Wednesday and called on the authorities to intervene to ensure that the incident is not repeated.
