'Why I Didn’t Step Down, Work With Atiku’ – Peter Obi

The former Vice Presidential candidate for the Labour Party, LP, in the last election, Peter Obi, has shed light on his decision not to withdraw his candidacy in favor of his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, counterpart, Atiku Abubakar.

To provide some context, Obi had served as Atiku’s running mate during the 2019 presidential election, both representing the PDP. However, internal conflicts within the PDP led to Obi’s departure from the party, and he subsequently joined the LP. Under the LP banner, he contested the presidential election and secured victories in 12 states across the nation, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Obi chose to make his statement to the press approximately two weeks after the Supreme Court upheld President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 general election. He revealed that his refusal to step down or collaborate with Atiku was rooted in his commitment to campaigning for a new Nigeria, setting him apart from other presidential candidates.

He said, “We don’t regret anything we did. We came out on a campaign for new Nigeria which no other person did.”
