An unspecified number of people are missing after a boat carrying more than 100 passengers capsized in the Karim Ramid regional government area of Taraba Province.
The boat capsized in the Vinelli community of Karimuramid in the middle of the Benue River on Saturday night 2023/10/28.
The boat was returning from the fish market in the Mayoreneyo community of Ardo-Kola LGA in the province.
It was collected that none of the passengers wore life jackets.
Abdullahi Usman, a spokesman for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident to journalists on Sunday.
But he was silent on the casualty figures of the accident.
Local source Jesse Dunrady told Channel TV that 3 bodies were recovered minutes after the incident and 12 bodies were later recovered by fishermen in the area.
Sources revealed that the ill-fated boat was returning from the fish market in the Mayoreneyo community in the Ardo-Kola local government area before the accident happened 50 minutes after takeoff.
Jidda Mayorenero, the acting chairman of the state’s inland water transporter, who confirmed the incident, said 15 bodies had been recovered so far.
