Boat Capsizes in Lagos, Killing Two Teenage Girls

Two girls, Mistrat Okumbanjo, 18, and Azeezat Amoo, 16, were confirmed dead after a boat capsized in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

 

The accident occurred on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at about 8 p.m. and claimed four other victims.

 

 

 

Olorade Agboola, deputy director of public relations for the state fire department, said in a statement on Friday that the passengers were on their way to Isawo from the Olorunsogo area of the community when the boat overturned.

 

 

 

Agboola said firefighters, with the help of local residents, conducted a search and rescue operation and recovered the bodies.

 

 

 

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service conducted an overnight operation in Isawo community, Ikorodu area of Lagos, and succeeded in rescuing four adult females and containing two others.

 

 

 

“The accident was reported at 8:16 p.m. on Thursday and the rescue team was dispatched. The crew was accompanied by local people familiar with the terrain.

 

 

 

“Despite the darkness, the hunt continued until midnight. Four of the six victims on the overturned boat crossing from Olorunsogo to Isawo were saved.

 

 

 

“The crew continued the search early Friday morning, sweating. Unfortunately, they found the bodies of two women, Mistrat Okumbanjo, 18, and Azeezat Amoo, 16.

 

 

 

“The recovery operation ended around 10 pm.
