Family Announces Burial Arrangement for Nigerian Student Who Died Aboard EgyptAir

The family of the late Nigerian student, Remilekun Meshioye, has unveiled their plans for her burial, including the repatriation of her body from Cairo to Lagos, scheduled for Wednesday.

On September 4, 2023, Meshioye, aged 41, embarked on an Egypt Air flight from the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, with the intention of reaching London.

Tragically, during the flight, she fell critically ill and was subsequently declared deceased upon arrival at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt.

However, her grieving family contends that her demise occurred during the flight and asserts that her body was unceremoniously left in Cairo, raising questions about the circumstances of her passing.

Announcing plans for her burial about a month after her death, spokesman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Abdur-Rahman Balogun said via X on Monday, “According to the programme being coordinated by her sister, Lola Olaniyi-Alabi, the body will arrive in Lagos on Wednesday, October 18, from Cairo.

“Thereafter, there will be a service of songs at the Winners Chapel Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday, October 19, by 4 p.m., while the burial will hold at Matori Cemetery Ladipo, near Oshodi Bus Terminus, Lagos, at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 20.”

Balogun further stated that Olaniyi-Alabi said the family decided to repatriate Meshioye’s body back home for burial following the refusal of Egypt Air management to accept full responsibility for what happened to its passenger.

She said the family had written a series of petitions to Egypt Air and its management but has refused to even condole them up to this moment, let alone accept the responsibility of bringing the corpse back in line with global aviation rules.

Also, the Egypt Air management has refused to respond to a letter written to it by NIDCOM to seek clarification on the matter and do the needful for the family.
