Police Officer Detained For Allegedly Killing Farmer In Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken Inspector Oliver Akang into custody on suspicion of the fatal shooting of a farmer named Ini Charlie Umoh.

The incident occurred in the rural setting of Ibong Otoro village, situated in the Abak Local Government Area of the state.

SP Odiko Ogbeche-Macdon, the official spokesperson for the police command, made this announcement on Sunday, October 15, 2023.

He conveyed that the State Criminal Investigation Department has been entrusted with the responsibility of investigating this case, acting upon the directives of the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.

“The officer involved is still in custody and the matter is being handled at the State CID by the Deputy Commissioner on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police who ordered a diligent investigation. The command never kept mute and is open to addressing any pending issue,” the PPRO said.

Akang and five other policemen attached to the command’s Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism Unit were said to have stormed Asutan Street, Off Barracks Road, Uyo, the state capital on September 9, 2023, and shot sporadically.

It was gathered that during the raid, a bullet allegedly fired from Akang’s rife hit Charlie.

The policemen were said to have fled the scene after killing the father of four.

Earlier in an interview with the publication, the deceased’s sister, Esther, and his brother, Destiny, claimed that the state command offered them N1.2m and asked them to sign an undertaking to stop legal proceedings and keep the matter away from the media.

“But what we want now is justice. Our brother had four kids before he died and the oldest child is 10 years old. Now, there is no one to cater for the children as his wife is jobless,” Esther said.
