The positions of senate president and deputy are no longer open to first-time senators.
This occurred after Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) pushed for a motion to amend the senate’s “Standing Order.”.
The motion was approved by a majority of the senators after being put to a voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Since the amendment was passed on Tuesday, October 3, candidates for the Senate President and Deputy Senate must have served at least one term in the Senate.
The amendment was passed after Akpabio defeated Abdulaziz Yari, a first-time senator, to win the office of senate president.
