Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that police officers are not financially disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford high-end smartphones.
Mr. Adejobi made this statement on a Saturday via a communication channel, responding to the controversy sparked by a photograph he had previously shared.
On the preceding Friday, the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO) had posted an image featuring David Victoria, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and the Secretary to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In the photo, she was seen holding a Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 smartphone and wearing a wristwatch adorned with diamonds.
“We have beautiful and intelligent ones in the force. This is DSP David Victoria, secretary to the IGP. Happy weekend. Ire o,” Adejobi wrote.
His post got several persons wondering how she could afford a cellphone worth nearly N1 million.
One X user wrote, “Her cellphone, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, is worth over a million naira. I don’t wanna talk about her wristwatch, which is also not cheap. Where did she get the money from, and how much is her monthly salary that she was able to afford all that?”
In response, Adejobi said police officers are not paupers, while he asked the X user to withdraw his statement.
“Police officers are not paupers. Withdraw your statement. It’s ridiculous to us to say a DSP can’t use Samsung fold 2…. you need to reason straight and be objective. Do you know what it is to be a DSP?” Adejobi said.
