University Of Lagos, A Prolong Resumption Date

While Nigerians Celebrate the Nation’s 63 Independece , the university of Lagos students have been bitter and expressing dissatisfaction following the prolong school resumption for 2023/2024 accademic session.

The said resumption date which according to the university management was earlier fixed to commence on the 3rd of October according to the planed accademic calendar communicated to the students just after last second semester Exams was recently said in the early month of September to have been shifted from October 3rd to October 17th . Although , no reason was communicated to the students for this .

The students however knew and said among themselves that , it’s been a culture of the university of Lagos never to resume at the fixed date accordingly.

This was still cool with the students until the 30th of September, when a circular got to the students’ platform stating that the 2023/2024 accademic session expected resumption date has been postponed November by four weeks extension.

The unilag students in their mass reactions have expressed a dissatisfaction at the breaking of the news. Following their bitter and angry expressions via their students’ social media platforms ,stating how the management of the university of 1st choice is less concern if academic plans and decisions taken by the management is ok and favourable to students or not.
According to the planned changes communicated to the students’ from the office of the Director of Students’ Affairs (DSA) , Prof.Obalola. who pleaded with the students that the “four weeks resumption extension is aiming at the welfare of the students’ just to fix the hostels and Laboratories within the resumption extended period.

This excuse or reason is not digestible to students.” Unilag wahala and disappointment of Students’ too much ” some lamented and recounted how they have been moving from one issue to the other with the university management ranging from the the recent astronomical fee hike follow ed by protest, bargaining and discussion engagements by students Leaders with the school management while they are not 100%satisfied with the alledge reduction of school fees by the management ,seeking the Nigerian public intervention for a total reversal. The DSA has earlier claimed that about 75% of the students have paid and again stated to the students that lack of fund by the university management is also part of reason for the postponement of the said resumption.

The students’ body has felt dissatisfied with the position of the DSA alledging that ,he is not functioning in his capacity maximumly for the students welfare but has always come up with “,good adjectives ” defining reasons why student must bear the unfavorable outcome of decisions by the unilag management which are often detrimental to the students . inclusively ,the I T program for other students and teaching practice for program for faculty of education students in 400level are not planned and implemented in a manner that should preserve students’ interest and achievements of objectives rather undeu pains which left them enduring the exercise instead.

Unilag students’ have falted the school management for the current fee increament in the face of the Nation’s economic hardship not minding how it may false some students’ to drop out of school more ever, some of the final year students who do not have sponsors but struggling to train themselves in school.

The university management going by this ,may prolong the graduation of final year student to linger into 2025 , this holds high level of fear in for final year students whom have been in the school since 2018 till date wishing to have passed out. comparing to the their colleagues in other universities.

The students’ leaders of all faculties and departments have in recent times, pleaded with the university management to revert the hike fee which they discribed as not being suitable in the face of hash economy “make education affordable for all” they said as it’s still pending.
