Rivers United beat Etoile Filante 2-0 and booked their place in the group stages of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday in Port Harcourt after two quick goals from Alex Oyowah.
The Nigerian side had earlier missed two penalties and scored in the late moments to secure a progression to the group stage.
Oyowah broke the deadlock in the 89th minute before doubling the advantage in added time from the spot.
Endurance Ebedebiri saw his effort saved from 12 yards by the visitors’ goalkeeper in the first half just as Farouk Mohamed also struck the post from the second penalty in the second half.
As it was last season, the Port Harcourt club are the only Nigerian club to reach the group stages on the continent this season after Enyimba, Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance failed to do so.
Enyimba and Remo were eliminated in the first-round preliminary round of the CAF Champions League while Insurance were knocked out 3-2 on aggregate by RS Berkane in the Confederation Cup.
