On Friday, September 8, a local boat carrying residents including children, capsized in the well-known Njuwa lake across from Rugange village in Yola South local government area of Adamawa State, leaving at least fifteen people presumed dead.
According to reports, a strong windstorm caused water to blow into the victims’ boat, which capsized immediately, as they crossed to the main Yola town to conduct their regular local business.
Six people were saved by local divers and a larger boat that arrived at the scene, despite the local boat allegedly having about twenty passengers on board.
The state police command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident and said search and rescue efforts are still being made to find and save those aboard the capsized canoe.
