Chinedum Orji, the son of the former Abia State governor, Theodore Orji, experienced a setback on Thursday when the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, dismissed his petition.
A prominent figure in Abia’s political landscape, Orji, who previously served as the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, faced defeat in the February election for the Umuahia/Ikwuano Federal Constituency. The victory in this election was secured by Obi Aguocha, the candidate representing the Labour Party (LP).
The three-man panel of the tribunal dismissed the petition by Orji, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was seeking to nullify Aguocha’s victory.
The three judges of the panel in a unanimous judgment read by Justice Abubakar Kutigi dismissed Orji’s petition for lack of merit and affirmed Aguocha as the winner of the election to represent Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives.
Aguocha polled 48,199 votes to defeat Orji who scored 35,195 votes.
