Alleged Fund Diversion: Armed Policemen, Thugs Storm Ogun LG Secretariat, Chairman Flees

On Thursday, armed police officers stormed the Ijebu East Local Government headquarters in Ogun State amid a heated conflict between Chairman Wale Adedayo and Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Adedayo had leveled allegations against Abiodun, claiming that he was involved in the misappropriation of federal funds meant for local councils in the state.

Although, the police did not find Adedayo, a journalist, at the office when they arrived, the LG chairman stood on his position in a Facebook post.

He said, “Invading peaceful Ogbere community with mobile policemen in order to impeach Wale Adedayo is desperation.

“As I told the SSG yesterday, we took an oath with our fathers that that we’ll make this land better than we met it. You can kill the body, but not the spirit of Wale Adedayo.”

Following this, the Ijebu East councilors have suspended Adedayo as chairman for three months on allegations of maladministration and financial mismanagement.

Seven councillors, on Thursday, said the legislative council received various allegations that need to be investigated and directed Adedayo to appear at its next sitting on September 14, 2023.

The councillors who signed a statement directing Adedayo’s suspension include leader of the house, Fasheyi Adesuji (Itele Ward 7), deputy leader, Bolutife Osunfisan (Imushin Ward 2), chief whip, Kemi Aliu (Imobi Ward 10), Adeniyi Adenuga (Imusin Ward 1), Abass Sidikat (Owu Ward 5), Biyi Oguntubo (Imobi Ward 9), and Rotimi Williams (Ajebandele Ward 11).

“The Council Chairman, Hon. Wale Adedayo, is hereby suspended for three months pending the conclusion of the investigations and therefore directed to handover all the properties of the Council in his possession to the Vice Chairman, who will act as the Chairman during the suspension of the Chairman as provided in the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the statement said.

Fifteen allegations were levelled against the suspended chairman.

Among them are the withdrawal of N4 million from LG account for empowerment in 2022, which they claimed never took place, and alleged wastage of N2 million on Isese Day on August 20, 2022.
