Margaret Igbetar, a retired judge, is killed in Benue by unidentified assailants.

Justice Margaret Igbetar, a retired president of the Customary Court of Appeal, was assassinated by unidentified assailants in Makurdi, Benue State.

 

 

Her son discovered her dead body at No. 1’s house, where it had been there for some time. On Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 1 Wantor Kwange Street, Benue State University (BSU), Gboko Road, across from the School of Medicine.

 

 

 

 

 

A source told igberetv that her son had reported the murder case to the Makurdi “E” Division Police station.

 

 

 

 

She must have been killed before yesterday (Thursday), according to the source, who noted that her corpse appeared to be decomposing at the time the body was discovered.

 

 

 

 

 

Although SP Daniel Ezeala, the Divisional Police Officer for the E division, could not be reached right away for comment, a reliable police source confirmed the incident.

Her lifeless body was found in her home yesterday, Thursday, August 24, 2023, but it didn’t look too good, so her death couldn’t have occurred yesterday (Thursday); instead, it might have occurred the day before yesterday. According to the police source, the son is providing helpful information that could result in the arrest of suspects in connection with the incident.

 

 

 

 

 

The police source informed the media that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of death and those responsible.

 

 

 

 

 

The late Mrs. Margaret Igbetar was born on October 17, 1950, in Mbape, Shangev-ya, Tsar-Mbaduku, in the Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue state. She was married and had two sons and five daughters out of her seven children.

 

 

 

 

She began her career in 1971 as the Assistant Registrar, Grade I at the Area Court in Katsina-Ala, Benue State. She later worked at the NYSC, Ministry of Justice, Minna, Niger State, in 1976, as a pupil state counsel, Ministry of Justice, Benue State, in 1976–77, and eventually rose to the position of Co-ordinator, Customary Court of Appeal, The Judiciary, Benue State, in 1993–95.

 

 

 

 

 

In addition, she was appointed Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal, a position she held from 1995 to 2003.

 

 

 

 

 

The late Justice Igbeta was a founding member, a life member, the first chair of the FIDA Benue branch, and a national trustee of the organization. She also served as the association’s national trustee.
