Bayana Bayana bows out valiantly from the Women's World Cup

Banyana Banyana lost their round of 16 World Cup tie 2-0 to the Netherlands at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday 6th August, but they did so with a high sense of pride and combativeness.

Two goals in either half from Man City’s Gill Rood (8’) for her fourth of the tournament and a howler gifted to Beeresteyn (68’) seals Dutch passage to quarter-finals to face Spain.

South Africa were forced to make two early changes: Seoposenwe and Mbane soon thereafter are forced off due to injury; Wendy Shongwe and Tiisetso Makhubela came on.

Tough luck to African champions who can be proud of their last 16 historic appearance and a very valiant effort against the Dutch.

FT: Netherlands 2-0 South Africa [Roord 9′, Beerensteyn 68′]

Banyana bow out. Salute on reaching a first-ever World Cup knockout, all the same.

No surprises yet in the Last 16, as the Dutch join Japan and Spain in the quarters. Two African teams will be playing in the R-16 as Nigeria squares off with England on Monday 7th, while Morocco will face France on Tuesday 8th.
