Political leaders push for state burial for ex-Senate President Wayas

Some political leaders operating under the aegis of Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN), at the weekend, called for the state burial of the late former Senate President, Joseph Wayas.

They described the delay in the burial of the late politician as a national embarrassment and pleaded with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio to intervene and facilitate a befitting burial.

They said, Wayas did his best for the nation when he was Senate President in the second Republic which was led by President Shehu Shagari from 1979 to 1983.

Speaking at a press conference over the weekend, the National Secretary of the Forum, Francis Okereke Wainwei said, the Senate President should intervene to solve challenges that have led to the unnecessary delay, saying that the late elder statesman cannot be left like that anymore.

“We are hereby appealing to Akpabio, President of the 10th Senate to intervene in the matter and resolve whatever challenges that have led to this unnecessary delay in giving our revered former Senate President a befitting burial.

“We are incurably optimistic that our uncommon transformational leader will heed our call and do the needful,” the leaders appealed.

It’s recalled that the former Nigerian leader died on Thursday, December 2, 2021 in a London hospital after a protracted illness and his corpse was yet to be brought home for burial since then.
