DSTV/GOTV: Reps Pass Bill to Enforce Pay Per View Billing

Following persistent calls by Nigerians on the status of the DSTV Pay As You Go tariff being pursued by the member representing Ukanafun Oruk/Anam Federal Constituency and Deputy Chairman Communications Committee in the House of Representatives, Rep. Unyime Idem, it has become necessary to give an update as follows:

1. That after the motion by Rep. Unyime Idem seeking to investigate non implementation of Pay As You Go tariff by DSTV and other broadcast satellite service providers, the House in its wisdom set up an adhoc committee headed by him to investigate the matter.

2. During investigation, DSTV increased the prices of its bouquet. Irked by this act of insensitivity, the Committee asked the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, the Regulator, to order DSTV to revert to the old price.

3. DSTV responded by saying that the NBC Act does not give it powers to regulate or fix prices for her services stating that the forces of demand and supply is the determining factor.

4. Worried by this response, Rep. Idem sought for an amendment of the NBC Act to power to NBC, the Regulator, for price negotiation, determination and fixing.

5. The NBC Act (amendment) has since been passed by the House of Representatives and is now awaiting concurrence by the Senate before being implemented.

6. Rep. Idem wishes to appreciate everyone who has been asking questions about the DSTV issue. He has promised to liaise with the relevant authorities to get the concurrence, passage and assent. He has assured the over 7 million viewing household that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
