Ogun Sports writers beg govt to renovate stadiums

Ogun State Government has been urged to renovate all sports stadia in the state for the development of sporting activities, especially to aid the discovery of talents among the younger ones.

The Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) made this plea at its May congress held Wednesday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

In a communique signed by the SWAN Chairman in Ogun, Akeem Akintunde, the sports writers commended the Ogun State government for the rehabilitation of MKO Abiola Stadium.

However, they urged the government to rehabilitate the main bowl of the stadium, which the NFF had banned from hosting any football event.”

The group also called on the government to extend a similar gesture to the Gateway Stadiums across the other zones of the state, including the Muda Lawal Stadium in Asero, Abeokuta.

They called for the rehabilitation of the Mundo turf at the MKO Abiola stadium, which they said is in a dilapidated state.

While commending the government for fulfilling the promises made to athletes who participated in the last National Sports Festival, SWAN frowned at “the poor commitment” of the government to the proposed hosting of the next sports festival.

The communique made available to DAILY POST by Ogun SWAN Secretary, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, stated that the group described as encouraging, the performance of Remo Stars FC in the NPFL, urging do more so as to qualify for the Super 6, where they will be able to qualify for a continental ticket.

“The Congress assessed the performance of the three (3) Ogun State teams in the NNL and commends Stormers FC and Ijebu United for their performance so far, but observes that the performance of the state-owned Gateway FC has not been encouraging,” it was said
