2023 Elections: INEC Raised Hope Of Nigerians But Failed — UK Govt

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC’s disappointing performance in the recently concluded 2023 Nigerian general elections particularly the failure of its Bimodic Voter Accreditation System  and IReV.

The outgoing British envoy also reiterated that Nigerian politicians who violated human rights, election manipulation or perpetrated violence during the 2023 election will be punished by the UK government.

Speaking to Symfoni in an interview, monitored by IgbereTV, Laing stated that there might be a visa ban for such politicians or other sanctions would be instituted as punishment for the act.

She also called out the Independent National Electoral Commission for failing to deliver on its promise of ensuring that election results are viewed by Nigerians in real time. Laing said this created room to manipulate results and also affects INEC’s credibility.
